United Plastics Corporation Celebrates 80 Years of Manufacturing Excellence

From Mayberry roots to modern extrusion and sound-abatement solutions, UPC marks eight decades of innovation, quality, and customer partnership.

Milestones matter, but what they really measure is the steady work behind the scenes: the teams who show up, the customers who trust you, and the willingness to keep improving year after year. This year, United Plastics Corporation (UPC) is proud to celebrate 80 years in business—80 years of turning ideas into dependable plastic extrusions and fabricated components that help customers build, protect, seal, cushion, and quiet the world around us.

Headquartered in Mount Airy, North Carolina, UPC has grown from its early beginnings in the post-war manufacturing boom into a trusted partner for customers across automotive, construction, furniture, and many other industries. While materials, processes, and markets have evolved, the mission has remained consistent: deliver high-quality products, solve problems quickly, and build long-term relationships grounded in reliability.

A legacy built over decades

UPC’s story includes reinvention, expansion, and a steady focus on manufacturing know-how. Here are a few highlights along the way:

  • 1946: Founded as Carolina Industrial Plastics (CIP) in Mount Airy, North Carolina.
  • 1950s–1970s: Growth through changing ownership and applications, including extrusion products supporting industrial and automotive needs.
  • 1994: The Mount Airy facility was purchased by local business leaders and formed into United Plastics Corporation, building on decades of manufacturing experience.
  • 2010s: Expansion into soundproofing and noise-barrier materials for commercial, residential, and automotive applications.
  • Today: UPC continues to invest in people, process control, and customer collaboration—bringing extruded sheet, roll goods, profiles, and fabricated components to market with a focus on quality and performance.

What UPC makes (and where it goes)

UPC specializes in thermoplastic extrusion—producing wide-format flexible extruded products in sheet and roll form, as well as custom profiles in flexible, rigid, and dual-durometer constructions. With in-house engineering support and a practical, production-first mindset, the team works with customers from early design through launch to help parts perform the way they need to in the real world.

Across industries, UPC products show up in places people may never notice—but would miss if they weren’t there: seals and gaskets, wear surfaces, protective barriers, thresholds, and components used in assembled systems. In automotive interiors, UPC is known as a major supplier of die-cut wear pads and sound-abatement elements used to reduce noise and improve durability.

Quality, domestic manufacturing, and continuous improvement

Longevity is earned through consistency. UPC operates as an ISO 9001:2015 certified organization and manufactures products at its Mount Airy facility using domestically sourced materials—reinforcing a commitment to dependable lead times, process control, and repeatable quality. For customers, that translates to fewer surprises and more confidence from prototype to production.

Over the last decade, UPC has also broadened its capabilities to support soundproofing applications—offering noise barrier solutions for floors, walls, and ceilings and supporting customers who need both material performance and manufacturing scalability. It’s one more example of how UPC adapts: listening closely, iterating quickly, and delivering practical solutions that fit the application.

The people behind the products

While equipment and materials matter, UPC’s 80-year story is ultimately a story of its people—of skilled operators, engineers, maintenance teams, quality professionals, and customer service staff who take pride in getting details right. It’s also a story of customers who bring challenges worth solving and a community that has supported a manufacturing mainstay for generations.

Looking ahead to the next decade

As applications become more demanding and supply chains keep shifting, UPC remains focused on what has always set the company apart: responsive partnership, disciplined manufacturing, and the ability to translate requirements into parts that perform. That means continuing to refine processes, expand material and fabrication options, and help customers move quickly from concept to production—without compromising quality.

To our employees, customers, suppliers, and neighbors: thank you for being part of our story. We’re honored to celebrate 80 years—and even more excited about what we’ll build together next.
