About Us
United Plastics Corporation (UPC) is located in Mount Airy, North Carolina, the quaint, mountainous town that served as the inspiration for the fictional town of Mayberry on “The Andy Griffith Show.” UPC has been a mainstay in Mount Airy for more than 75 years, proudly manufacturing all of our products in our Hay Street facility using domestically sourced materials. We provide innovative products to a wide range of customers and markets meeting the highest quality standards. Our continued success since our founding in 1946 is a result of a collaborative work environment, supporting our customers, valued employees and their families.

our history
1946
United Plastics Corp. was originally founded as Carolina Industrial Plastics (CIP) by brothers Locke and Lewis Webb, who were as prolific as entrepreneurs as they were pioneers in the plastics industry. Innovative products like the hula hoop and plastic-coated wire for clotheslines can trace their roots back to humble beginnings at CIP.
1952
CIP was acquired by Essex Wire & Cable, which converted the company’s production to the extrusion of black vinyl tape for wire wrap.
1972
Essex was bought out by United Technologies Corp., and the Mount Airy plant became part of UT’s Automotive Group. It expanded into flexible PVC gaskets and seals for cars.
1992
UT Automotive was sold and split up. The Mount Airy plant was bought by an investment group in Detroit.
1994
A group of Mount Airy businessmen purchased the local facility and formed United Plastics Corp. Since 1994, UPC’s capabilities have grown as the firm moved into automotive heel pads, TPO walkways and rigid foam thresholds. Their line of soundproofing products has become a major soundproofing provider to the Tier-1 automotive sector.
2013
UPC was acquired by a commercial building envelope systems manufacturer and begins production of an innovative roofing product while continuing to serve our core plastics customers
2021
UPC celebrates 75 years in business.
